How to Share a Vault Between iPhone and Android, Step by Step
You are on an iPhone, your partner is on a Pixel, and the Wi-Fi password, the insurance policy and the kids' passports belong to both of you. Here is exactly how a cross-platform shared vault will work, screen by screen.
In short
- One invite works for both platforms: send the link, or show it as a QR.
- You approve every request, after checking that the characters on both screens match.
- The person you invite joins free. Only the owner needs the Shared plan.
- Members read and write with their own keys. Only the owner invites, approves or removes, and a removal rotates the keys.
1. Create the shared vault
In Vaults, add a vault and choose Shared vault: "for family or people you trust, on Apple or Android devices." Give it a name everyone will recognise, like Home or Family. Then move or copy in the logins and documents you mean to share. Everything else stays in your private vaults, which the people you invite never see.
2. Invite them
Open the vault's people and tap Invite People. You get a link and a QR code. Send the link over Messages, WhatsApp or email, or, if they are next to you, let them scan the QR. The link opens at kinshipvault.app/join and goes straight into the app on iPhone or Android.
3. They join
On Android, the invitee taps the link, or opens Vaults → Join a shared vault and scans or pastes the invite. On an iPhone, the same link opens the app. Joining sends you an encrypted request. It carries none of their items, and they see nothing of yours until you say yes.
4. You approve
The request appears on your device with the type of device it came from. Compare the characters it shows with the ones on their screen, in person or on a call. Approve only if they match. A mismatch means the request did not come from the person you invited, so tap Not now. Nothing here is automatic.
5. Live with it
From now on, a change made on any phone reaches all the others. Your partner updates the Wi-Fi password on Android; your iPhone's AutoFill has it a moment later. The people on Apple devices keep syncing each other through iCloud, the people on Android through Google Drive, and an end-to-end encrypted relay carries sealed changes between the two.
Removing someone
Open the vault's people and tap Remove. The vault moves to fresh keys, sealed only to the people who remain, so the removed person cannot read anything written afterwards. As with any sharing, removal cannot make someone forget a password they already saw, so change the important ones; the generator makes that quick. As the owner you can also Stop sharing or Delete this shared vault altogether.
