What zero-knowledge actually means

Zero-knowledge describes a system where the party running it has zero knowledge of what it stores. Your passwords are encrypted on your device before they are ever saved or synced, using a key derived on the device and held only there. What reaches any server is ciphertext: unreadable bytes. The provider can store and move those bytes, but it cannot turn them back into your passwords, because it does not have the key.

Encrypted at rest is not the same thing

Many services advertise "bank-level encryption" or "encrypted at rest." That usually means your data is encrypted on the company's servers with keys the company also holds. It protects against a stolen hard drive. It does not protect against the company itself, a rogue employee, a legal demand, or an attacker who breaches the servers and takes the keys along with the data.

Zero-knowledge asks something of you in return for real privacy: since no one can reset your access, you must set up your own recovery in advance. Watch for "zero-knowledge, but." Some services are zero-knowledge for the vault yet keep metadata, the sites you have accounts on, timestamps, or usage analytics, in readable form. Ask what is encrypted and what is merely stored.
